We were sad to leave this morning, after breakfast and a last scope through the trees to spot any monkeys jumping about we headed off on foot down to the village where we were getting the minivan back to medan.
There are only two places in the world to see Orangutans in their natural habitat; here in North Sumatra and Borneo, Malaysia. Apparently the best place to see them is in North Sumatra because they are protected here in national parks and the wild; in 2012 there were 7000 Orangutans in North Sumatra and the number has just increased because of their protection. Poachers face at least 15 years in prison if they kill one. Although in Borneo the number of rubber tree and oil palm tree plantations are rising so the deforestation is rising. The farmers at old by their employers that if they see an orrangutan near their land they are to shoot then and they will get a bonus. They aren't as well protected in Borneo I don't think. Not many animal is because f the deforestation rapidly increasing.
It was a very bumpy ride back to the city, on the way we went through all the little villages. Indonesia is full of musicians! Every restaurant and guesthouse in bukit lawang had people playing their guitars and singing western songs. It was really nice! As we went passed the villages I spotted quite a few young lads just sat out on their porch teaching themselves how to play a guitar. Believe it or not there are some good singers amongst them aswell!
In bukit lawang they have a jungle song, it's to the tube of jingle bells...
'Jungle trek, jungle trek,
In bukit lawang...
See the monkeys see the birds see Orangutans..'
That's the chorus I can't quite remember all of the verses but we have it on video!
We got dropped off at our hotel 'house of Zaza zizi', there isn't much to see around Medan and it doesn't seem like a very touristy place. Just somewhere people come before and after flying out and moving on to somewhere new. The hotel was pleasant enough and they had a cafe downstairs so we crashed out all afternoon and had a much needed early night as we have to be up for 2.30am tomorrow morning to be at the airport for our flight to Yogyakarta. How pleasant.
