The next day onto Cooktown where we picked from some fairly average caravan /camping sites and then had a lovely bbq on the waterfront near the pier. Kids played soccer with the local indigenous children.
An early start in the boat and we headed out to some reef about 5 km offshore for some fishing after advice from the local tackle shop. We had a great morning on the water unfortunately we only caught one under size mackerel !
We did a quick trip up the river search for big lizards and saw real croc-It was only a wipper snapper at approx. 1 metre. We saw some yachts that were a little worse for wear and had sunk in the river.
A quick visit to the local info centre and art gallery and botanical gardens . On leaving town we called into finch beach for a quick dip and then off north to the Lakefield National Park for some bush camping next to a very suspicious looking river. We had a nice camp fire to ourselves.
The next morning we explored an old station-Old Laura. Then experience some very interesting country and had a fish in a river called Kennedy's Bend.
We stopped here as we had seen a photo of a 5.5 m and 3 m croc sunning themselves on the river bank 3 day before . On arrival the boys noted there was quite a bit of fish action so we settled in there for some lunch and some fishing. We managed to catch two small perch and ate one for tea. While were very weary of the water we didn't catch a glimpse of the big lizards!!!!
Later that day we experienced Brolgers dancing, a large 1.5 metre water monitor and very closer range, an abundance of magpie geese, another croc and many more birds of varied species. We called into red and white Lilly lagoons on our way to get to Weipa by night fall.
