Day 58 - Galena Bridge South Rest Area to Murchison House Station (138kms)
We left the rest area at 7:30am and as we were driving we saw 2 emus running in a paddock and they looked like they were running late for something - it was so funny watching them.
We arrived at Kalbarri National Park around 8:30am. We had to unhitch the caravan and then we continued to Nature’s Window (which is a wind eroded opening in the layered sandstone that frames a view of the river).
It has changed so much in 6 years. They now have a sealed path pretty much the whole way and it’s only when you arrive at Nature’s Window you have to climb up and over some rocks. The view is still spectacular and we enjoyed watching people taking their insta photos and then we had someone take a family photo for us. We sat and enjoyed the view of the gorge before it was time to walk back to the car.
Next stop we drove to Z bend lookout. This was also a very easy walk with lots of wildflowers and at the end is a lookout from an overhanging rock formation that provides views of the Murchison River Gorge.
We then drove back to the caravan, hitched on and then drove a short distance down the road to Murchison House Station. We camped along the Murchison river banks and the kids loved that right behind our campsite was a tyre swing.
The kids had fun on the swing while we set-up. We had a quick bite for lunch then drove to Blue Holes so we could go for a swim and snorkel.
The water is clear and has lots of great holes for snorkelling but the waves are so big and are crashing over the reef. We still enjoyed the snorkelling and just timed it between sets of big waves. The water was pretty shallow and most the time you could see the fish by just standing up. The kids had a great time swimming and playing in the sand. Josh also had fun trying to catch a fish in his hat - which of course he did and he spotted an octopus very close to the shore so he enjoyed pointing it out to everyone nearby. Rog & I enjoyed sitting on the sand and watching the big waves crash in.
We then drove to look at the coastal gorges which have been caused by wind and wave erosion exposing the sedimentary layers in the sandstone cliffs that plunge more than 100 metres to the ocean. We stopped at Natural bridge, Island rock, Shellhouse grandstand, Eagle gorge and Pot alley.
We then drove to Jake’s Point to watch the surfers. It’s an interesting spot as the surfers have to go out over the rocks to get into the waves.
When we got back to the caravan the kids went and patted the goats and looked at the chickens, sheep & alpacas. They then played on the tyre swing with lots of kids. It was hard to drag them away for dinner.
