Woke up to the horrific news of Los Vegas. Couldn't seem to get going, but prayers for all .
Decided to go visit the Hermitage. The Hermitage is the estate of Andrew Jackson. Jackson, besides being our 7th president, was a well known soldier and general. The estate includes a museum and information center that tells of Jackson's life and accomplishments. Some interesting facts... 1st president not from Massachusetts or Virginia.... ran as the people's president giving the everyday man more voice....self taught to become a lawyer and judge....fought in the revolutionary war and became a prisoner of war at age 14...his estate at one time had over 150 slaves....preferred to be remembered as a general rather than president.
Made our way through the grounds listening at various spots with our audio sets. Got to the house where we enjoyed a guided tour of the rooms which have been restored to their original appearance.
Continued the tour through the rest of the grounds learning about the Hermitage which was what we think of a large plantation. It was very self sufficient producing its own milk, meat, fruits and vegetables, even the bricks and wood for the house came from the property. The big cash crop however was cotton, which was harvested, taken to Nashville and floated down a series of rivers to New Orleans, where it was sold.
After a quick bite at the museum cafe, went off to explore another section of the city call 12 South. Cute area with pretty craftsmen and other homes boarding Belmont University. Shopped in some cute boutiques ( including Drapper James, Reese Witherspoon's store) , but left empty handed. Larry enjoyed a local brew, and I picked up some delicious ice cream.
Decided we wanted to return downtown in hopes of music. Went back to the rooftop bar, and yes there was a band, and enjoyed the early evening view. Left, checked out some boots, but wanted to hear more music. Found a new place called Second Fiddle on Broadway. The band was just finishing, but another was getting ready, so we decided to stay. Are we glad we did! This was my favorite of all. The Flying Buffaloes were great. Made up of five young men all wonderful musicians and several good singers. They played both country and some great rock:Marshall Tucker, Tom Petty ( requested by Larry ) , even the Beatles, plus some of their own. We loved them.
Reluctantly decided we better leave and go get something to eat. Walked across the street to Merchants and enjoyed a light meal after which decided it was time to call it a day.
Back to the resort, as tomorrow we must leave this fun city, and move to Memphis for one night.
