Began our day separately this morning as Larry was off to play golf in the resort, while I did some exploring. Following breakfast set out on a walk through the complex. Fairfield Harbour is a large complex comprised of lovely individual private homes, as well as condos and town houses. There is a golf course to enjoy, as well as a recreation center which includes two pools, tennis courts, miniature golf, sand volleyball, as well as basketball. The Broad Creek recreation sponsors many classes and activities.
Discovered some lovely wooded areas along the many ponds and lakes included on the property with homes by them. Made my way down to the marina located on river filled with sailboats and more condos facing the water. Very pretty.
Continued walking, looped around and made my way back to the condo, and was later joined by Larry. After changing, decide to head back to New Bern.
Unfortunately the weather, although sunny and beautiful here, was impacting the waterways. Still very choppy and rough, so we decided against any boating excursions. Choose instead to go to the Tryon Palace.
This place is a re-creation on the exact spot that the English governor of North Carolina had his residence in the 1700's. The original was destroyed in a fire in the early 1800's, and later rebuilt beginning in 1952 on the original foundation. The house is an interesting representation of how the wealthy for that time period lived. The gardens and grounds surrounding it are quite lovely, as they lead to a lovely view of the river.
Decided we had enough history, and went to explore the shops and establishments of the town. Did a little shopping and joined Larry at a local brewery/ wine store. Had some great seafood appetizers and bloody Mary's at a raw bar before heading to Morgan's Tavern for an awesome dinner .
Back to the complex, as tomorrow we say goodbye to New Bern, and off to our next spot, Asheville.
