Woke up this morning by the golf course as part of the Resort at Fairfield Harbour. Arrived last night a little late to explore. Seems like a cool place made up of permanent residents and guest which includes some lovely homes, as well as various types of condos and town houses. Made our way to the recreation center for some morning treats and information on activities here and places nearby.
Booked a sunset sailing cruise on the Neuse River, then headed to New Bern. Decided to take the trolley ride around the historic district. Our guide was very informative, and we got out a few times to see the cemetery, a historic church, and the first school in North Carolina.
Some of the old houses date back to the 1700's, as New Bern was this state's first capital.Sadly, some of the homes were destroyed in a massive fire caused by the dry roof shingles. This led to a law requiring metal roofs on all homes. We were told many interesting stories of homes, churches, schools, and even the cemetery. Washington apparently attended a big party here where he danced with seventy different women, and Truman would stop at a Baptist church here on his way to the Keys.
Walked to get some lunch making a stop at the spot where Pepsi ( formally known as Brad's drink, Brad was a pharmacist who made it to help with upset stomachs ) was invented , and Christ Episcopal Church. Christ Church is a beautiful historic church with painted, not stained, glass windows and lovely grounds which includes a pretty outdoor chapel.
Had a delicious lunch and drinks in the courtyard of a place called Prohibition, stopped in one or two shops before making our way to the river walk. Such a beautiful spot along the water where the Trent and Neuse Rivers meet to form a huge basin! Part of the walk was actually under water form the storm surge from Maria off the coast. Amazing!
Made our way walking through the historic district back to our car to head back to our resort for the cruise. We got back early enough to play a round of miniature golf, and were playing some pool when I discovered our sailing tour had been cancelled due to the surge causing dangerously high water around the dock. Bummer!
Oh well....headed back to New Bern and made our way to the Pollock Street Pub and Oyster Bar. Yummy, so good had to order a second batch of the Carolina oysters. Off to Morgans tavern ( another great spot) for a nightcap, then back to the resort.
Tomorrow brings morning golf for Larry, and resort walking/exploring for Elaine, then back to New Bern.
