Began the day with a delicious breakfast at Hillside House. Talked to some interesting people, and were given some advice about a nice hike. Hopefully we will be able to fit it in tomorrow morning. For now, off to the Biltmore. Last night's couples told us to get our entrance tickets at the nearby AAA, which saved us money and time, as when we arrived we could drive right in.
Drove the long entrance road, parked and took the shuttle to the house. What a magnificent structure, as it is the largest private residence in the country. The original estate was made up of over 125,000 acres, now down to " only " 8,000 acres. The landscape architect ( Frederick Olmsted) also designed Central Park. George Vanderbilt had this 178,000 sq ft of floor space house built in the 1890's.
The house is filled with original antiquities and art work, and even boast an indoor pool and bowling alley, indoor plumbing, and synchronized clocks throughout. All quite something for the time period. We chose to rent the audio tour which gave lots of insight to each room and stop on the tour.
Following the house tour, walked through the gardens, designed to look very natural. Made our way to the conservatory that was filled with all sorts of exotic plants and orchids. Next was the rose garden, spectacular and filled with many unusual and beautiful roses and the walled garden, also quite lovely.
Headed next to the winery for some samples, and to the bistro next door for a late lunch, then back to Asheville for a little exploring.
Tried doing their urban trail which is series of sculptures and markers throughout the city. Made about half way and decided to just explore on our own. Stumbled upon Battery Park Book Exchange and Champagne Bar, located in the historic Grove's Arcade Building.
What a fantastic spot! Has a great coffee bar, champagne, wine and beer bar, tens of thousands gently used books, interesting and wonderful art work, and lots of fantastic and fun sitting areas. They even have people come around and get you drinks! The decor is great, and if they sold shoes, I would have been in Nirvana!
Following 2 glasses of champagne, decided to try and find some music. Someone at the bookstore mentioned 5 Walnut Wine Bar, so walked there. When we arrived, they had lost power, so they were planning on closing at dark, and canceling the music. We decided to stay and have a drink, and we're glad we did.
Just as they were getting ready to close, the electricity came on. The band was called, and a little while later, they all arrived. They were fantastic. Had a horn section and a great singer too. The place was hopping, but fortunately we had been there earlier, so we're able to have a great seat near the window. Met some fun people, and wound up having a great night.
Back to bed, as hoping for a hike in the morning followed be our afternoon food tour.
