Off to a busy day here in New Orleans! Made our way to the Cafe du Monde branch which is located in the River Walk mall. Got some coffee and hot, fresh beignets and sat outside enjoying the river view with the boats and barges moving, as we ate.
Soon it was time to board our riverboat, the Creole Queen for our tour. She was conveniently docked right near us!
Got on board and found a seat outside where we later met Wendell who was our guide as we made our way up river. Wendell shared stories and information on the history and culture of New Orleans and the surrounding area. He was very interesting and entertaining. Before the boat left, scored some Bloody Mary drinks from the bar. A beautiful morning on the water with delicious drinks, what could be better!
The riverboat continued up river with views of New Orleans, and passed the largest sugar processing plant, before stopping at the site of the Battle of New Orleans where General Jackson defeated the British. It is part of the Jean Lafitte National Historic Park and Preserve. Got to only see part of it, but was informative and a lovely area.
Returned for the trip back to New Orleans on the boat. After getting another drink ( did I mention the bloodies and mimosas were all you could do drink for $10?), found another spot to sit. Boy is this part of the Mississippi River busy! Passed many large boats and barges as we found our way back.
Arrived at the dock, and decided to head to Palace Cafe for lunch. After a delicious lunch ( got my fried oysters salad), decided to head out to the WWII museum.
Walked there passing Lafayette Square. Very pretty. Found the museum, and boy is it huge! If you are ever in New Orleans, this is not to be missed! The displays are phenomenal. Many different areas. One with all sorts of information about the war as to how it developed, and what went on during the times.
Next went to a second building. One floor dealt exclusively with the war in the Pacific. The various displays made you feel like you were at the actual place. The area dealing with Guadalcanal and Solomon Islands was even set up in a jungle! Learned all sorts of interesting fact about the war in the Pacific and our involvement. Amazing! Need to bone up on my history.
After that floor, went to the next floor which dealt with the war in Europe. As with the Pacific display, you were made to feel a part of Europe with its fallen walls, and countryside feeling. Outstanding! Again learned much . Can see why those soldiers are called " the greatest generation ".
One more stop, as we went to where many of the planes were hanging. There were actual full size planes used in the war. Viewing ramps have been built so you can closer and different views. Got to see up close the small turret my dad sat in as a bottom gunner. Unbelievable!
Headed back to the hotel for a quick break, then went toward Frenchman Street. Have been told to go here for music as it is not as crowded as Bourbon Street.
Walked towards Frenchman passing Jackson Square with its beautiful church and lovely gardens. Went passed the French market, passing some interesting people, and finally made it to Frenchman. Stopped in one place and heard a good jazz group. Decided to move on when the band took a break. Down the street stumbled upon an outdoor art and crafts show before going to a next stop. Sat at the bar and heard another good band while having some good drinks, and eventually some fresh fish tacos. Yummy! Listened a while to the next band, but decided to head back.
Tomorrow brings the drive to our next stop, Panama City Beach, Florida.
