After chilling out in Agnes for 5 days we were ready for an adventure- Fraser Island was the perfect place for it. 3 days on a 4 wheel drive self safari. We had decided on our groups the evening before and to be fair, our group was a nice mix of people. Other than me and Ben there was another couple, Kevin from London and Ciara from Ireland, really nice people and Kevin was soooo funny! Next we had 2 dutch people, Susanne and Ruben. There was another girl, Dee from Ireland and Jen from Canada plus 3 girls from South Korea, who at first we were a bit worried about but 2 of them turned out to be a great laugh and god did they make a good stirfry!!!!!!!
Had to get up early on the first day to learn how to pack the car up with our camping stuff, the stove, 1 cooler for the food and a massive 1 for all of the alcohol!!! Out of 4 groups ours was the first to be up and running. Ben was first to drive and turned out to be probably the best driver we had the whole time. As a group we didnt get stuck in the sand once!!!! After crossing to the island we headed straight to Lake McKenzie- journey was slightly bumpy to say the least, but so much fun. Lake McKenzie is breathtakingly beautiful, crystal clear water!!!!! Only get to spend an hour there as we had to get going before the tide moved in. Next we made our way to the Maheno shipwreck which ran aground in 1935, apparently its just sinking further and further into the sand and probably will disappear altogether in the future.
After alot of bickering(which over the 3 days became quite a regular thing!) we found a great camp for the night. Here we made dinner and spent the night drinking and playing games. At one point me and Ben just lay on the sand in the pitch black starring at the stars- what a sight, it was amazing, the sky was beautiful!!!!
The next morning, we both woke up early- 430am to be exact!!! By 6am we couldnt lie there any longer the tent was boiling so we got up, tried to find a hidden place to go to toilet but had no luck so just did it totally exposed to the world while Ben kept guard and whistled. Cant believe some people actually take a spade and do their other business out there- dont their legs ache while they are crouching there???? Anyway, enough of the toilet facilities ( or lack of them).
After brekkie we all head to Indian Head where after a long, hot, sticky walk we get to an amazing lookout point, views all over the island. We then heade to Eli Creek after some heated debates, but it did turn out to be a great decision. The creek was fab, we all just lay there and floated along till we got to the sea, so relaxing. After sunbathing we took a chance and headed to a place marked on the map as a place of interest- Rainbow Gorge. None of us knew what we were looking for during the 2km walk but once we got there we knew we had definately found it! Just masses and masses of different coloured sand dunes- they were huge, had so much fun running down them. That night we camped at a different place and basically did the same as the night before, ate and drunk!
Next morning we woke up early again but weather was slightly cooler. Things took a turn for the worse when one of the girls told us the battery on the car was dead. Nobody had jump leads so we spent hours trying to flag somebody down who did. Luckily, one man stopped who couldnt get the car started but did give one of us a lift to the nearest village which was a 2 hour walk away. Within the hour she was back with a mechanic who had the battery charged up and we were all set to go within minutes!!!!
After the mornings little drama we headed to Lake Wabby. Had a boiling trek of 2km over the dunes before finally reaching our destination. We just jumped in and cooled off in seconds. The lake was beautiful, situated at the bottom of some really steep dunes- apparently its shrinking every year. After lunch we headed back to Rainbow Beach and held our breath as they checked the car for damage(some groups end up paying loads!) Luckily we were fine. Great end to an exciting 3days. Couldnt have asked for better weather and even though we argued quite a bit, a good group of people!!!!!
