Colleen & Tom's Explorations
After a beautifully rested night we checked out and were taken by golf buggy back to the airport. We thought for convenience we'd have breakfast at Maccas (the other places all seemed to offer various versions of lunch and dinner) but no, they only accept cash in Malaysian ringgits, which we didn't stock up on because we really didn't think we'd need it. So we checked in our baggage and got the train to the satellite terminal and found O'Brien's Irish cafe for a lovely breakfast. At the airport gate the lounge had an upstairs area for business class and our small section of economy, while the majority of people had to wait downstairs. The flight left 25 minutes late because of five tardy passengers. The 13 hour flight seemed awfully long. I finished watching Alfred Hitchcock and watched a couple of other movies - nondescript comedies - one with Bette Midler and So This is 40. We were often advised to fasten our seat-belts, and a couple of times coffee and tea service was halted because of safety aspects, but we didn't really have anything alarming. Certainly nowhere near the experience Sophie had last year. Food and service were lovely - Weiss mango bars and mini-Magnums included. Cheese and crackers with every meal. We were an hour late getting in to Heathrow, but immigration and customs were the most efficient we've ever had in London! Caught the Heathrow express to Paddington and back on familiar ground. Very nice. Unfortunately that's where the niceness stopped. I had decided to try a cheaper hotel - closer to the station. Oh my gosh, it is terrible. We are on the fourth floor, up narrow carpeted stairs. Yes, there are no lifts. The room has the double bed (that's right, not queen). And you can walk around it, but that's about all. The bathroom is one of those modules - you could wash your hands while still sitting on the lavatory, heavens you could even have your shower while sitting there if you so wished! And our luggage? Nowhere to put it! Luckily we're only there for 3 nights, and our days are busy. Early night, catch up on sleep.
