After docking in the port of Piraeus (which had archealogical digs scattered around) we were coached into town to begin our tour.

Dominating the Athenian landscape, the Acropolis is unsurpassed in its beauty, architectural splendour and historic importance. We had a guided tour of the Acropolis beginning with a walk up the upper city entrance through the Propylea. There were approximately 80 steep, marble steps and made for a great workout.

Our knowledgeable guide will led us through the National Archaeological Museum. We marvelled at the perfection, presence and power of the bronze statue of Poseidon and considered the excitement felt by Schliemann at Mycenae when he discovered the so-called death mask of Agamemnon along with a plethora of gold items.

Overlooked by the mighty monuments of the Acropolis stands the famous shopping district of Athens, The Plaka. The mazy and cobble-stoned pedestrian streets are a haven, which hide numerous plazas filled with boutiques and shops of every description. We managed to find the Hard Rock Cafe for the traditional t-shirt purchase!! There were groups of gypsies selling there wares on blankets on the ground - when the police arrive they scoop up their blankets and run away. There were many shops selling Turkish rugs - at much cheaper prices than we saw yesterday!!! Buy your Turkish rug in Athens!!!

After free time in the Plaka, we had lunch in one of the most unique restaurants in Athens. The restaurant produces food to traditional recipes as eaten by the population of ancient Greece. We dined as Gods of Ancient Greece - in a truly unique and unforgettable experience. The decorations and atmosphere in the restaurant were great.
