We spent the day on the walking trails in Karijini. The gorges here are just as beautiful as the Kimberley but in a different way. Here in Karijini we are at the top of the gorges and you walk down into them and then along the bottom to beautiful swimming holes. All up today we walked about 5 or 6 Kms and swam in 3 different water holes. The water is cold so our swims are quick ones!

We travelled right through the heart of the Pilbara today (Red Dog country for anyone who has seen the movie) from near Karratha to Karijini national park which is near Tom Price. We used the Rio Tinto access road and to obtain a permit we needed to watch a 20 min DVD about safety. It is beautiful country, with the red iron ore hills contrasting with the yellow spinifex grass. Finally the Taylors have caught a fish! It was Pippy who caught it, from her first cast and from a hand line. Admittedly it wasn't quite big enough to keep but almost! While we were fishing we got talking to 2 local boys, Benjie showed them his spear and together the boys speared 2 good sized mud crabs which we cooked up and enjoyed. A milestone was reached today, the tripometer reached 10,000 Kms since we left Sydney. We drove over 600kms today from Broome to Port Hedland. Port Hedland is kind of interesting but only in that it is a purpose built mining town. Everyone is wearing high vis work wear, they even sell it in woolworths.
