I have been applying for teaching jobs via the internet and today I finally got a Job Interview. It was for a kindergarten school in the new area of town. The first problem was obviously getting there. The interview was at Cheery’s restaurant, Cheery was a teacher at the school, her Mum is the principle, so now she has a cafe not too far away they decided to interview over lunch.
I got directions to a big supermarket called ‘Da Ren Fa’ and Kelly schooled me on the precise way to say it – which sounds were up/down/flat/short the night before. That went OK and I found the supermarket, but couldn’t see the restaurant. After calling Vincent back home in case the email had any more clues, which it didn’t, I resorted to calling Cheery and having her come rescue me from under an obvious sign post. It’s very had to be given directions when you can’t read – can you see....., turn left at ...., opposite......etc are no good because everything is quite uniform in the new area, the obvious sign I mentioned was a huge post with KFC written on it!
The interview seemed to go well and we chatted about all different things. Cheery had an American accent and spoke fluently, her Mum had a more difficult accent but was still very good at English so we were able to chat as well as do the question and answer. The only thing is I’ll never get used to the Chinese habit of slurping food and talking with your mouth full, it just doesn’t seem professional in an interview!
After the interview they took me to the school to have a look around. My first thoughts were how lovely it looked, everything was very new and there was a wicked jungle gym in the covered playground. The only two things that weren’t so great were that it’s not finished yet, they still have to build some of the rooms including finishing the toilets – and school starts on Monday next week, I hope they don’t have Indian speed builders The second thing was that there is no heating installed yet! Argh I will freeze to death.
They gave me a lift back home as they have a driver and were going that way and said ‘We have one more person to interview then we will see about which classes to give you and email you the contract.’ Which sounded positive.
