Moved hotel so that I was in the same one as Jan and Chas. I arrived, checked in and asked about Jan & Chas - never heard of them, asked me to look through their bookings, couldn't see them!! I said, "but my sister said the hotel was picking them up from the airport" - they replied, "are you sure it was this hotel!!" Eventually they were found and everyone agreed a taxi had been dispatched to pick them up. To celebrate I trotted off to a local bakery for a much needed coffee.
There I was drinking a good cup of coffee when up came an American (I had made the mistake of smiling at him!!) Twenty minutes later I could have told you his life history and was getting to feel uncomfortable- he was the type you did not want to be in a lift with!! He was looking for a country; where he could live cheaply, where there were good looking birds to look at, where he could afford to have his teeth seen to. Luckily just when I was thinking how the hell do I get rid of him - Jan FaceTimed me from the airport - no taxi!! I paid - the American went off - I went back to hotel slowly (he was just down the road and I really didn't want him to know where I was staying) and said " my sister ....." just as they said "the taxi driver ...." Apparently they were all at the airport but in different places. Jan arrived 30 minutes later looking bright eyed and awake, Chas didn't seem to be quite so awake but both were keen to explore.
I do think I had done well - to celebrate them coming I arranged a water festival, fireworks and the largest street party in Cambodia. We went out for lunch and an explore. Chas had a snooze and Jan and I went out for a coffee and an explore. At 4.30 we all went down to the FCC to watch the crowds, races, barges and fireworks. Sadly I hadn't ensured the weather was good, just as the fireworks finished the rain came down so we just stayed in the FCC for dinner and watched the crowds just disappear. I had CHIPS!!
On the way back to the hotel we explored- instead of just going to the hotel we went the long way round and found where the crowds had gone to - they hadn't gone home to the dry - they had moved on to the open air concert and picnics that were near Independence Monument.
The photos Chas took really show how Cambodians party and live. I have put several in the album.
