This week has been spent in the office and living in Burly Guest House. It is a lovely guest house which is clean and tidy but after having my own house I realise I only like being in a hotel when on holiday.
Last night I did something I have not done since I was a child. I am not actually sure I did it then except around the yard at Gaysham. What you may be asking yourself did she do, was it sensible, should she have done it??? The answer I have to say is no she shouldn't have done it but it was fun!!
Friday night is the evening when VSO meets at a bar called the Penthouse. It overlooks Wat Langka and is in the heart of historical PP. Three of us decided to get a meal afterwards at a cafe called 63 which was quite close. Ellis offered me a lift on the back of her bike - luckily I had my helmet - so I said yes. She was upset that I felt I needed my helmet because it was only a push bike and I had to sit on the parcel shelf. After the meal she said she would take me home - everyone laughed as we went by - I had to wear my helmet again as how else would I carry it!! Now this journey included going along one of the busiest roads in PP. The only way that you can get onto some of these roads is just to drive straight into the traffic, which is exactly what she did. As I said it was great fun but I am not sure I would want to ride a bike in PP.
Just as you get to think PP is just like any other city: noisy; smelly; busy; congested; cosmopolitan exciting; multi-cultural etc etc etc you are proved wrong. There I was sitting eating my omelette and baguette (see what I mean just like anywhere in the world) when I looked up and saw a monk, as he arrived at the café the Buddhists put away their smart phones and got up. They went over gave their offerings and then the monk started to chant. He had a fabulous voice, the kind that makes everyone stop and listen which is exactly what we all did. Just for 5 minutes I could have been in the 15th century or in any Buddhist village but any city in the world - no I was in Cambodia!!
