I am going to Myanmar for a short break with Ellis, a fellow volunteer, on Monday. To go there I need a visa which I got last week. As I needed it printed out I trotted around to a print shop here in PP. They could not have been more helpful and after a very short time I went up to the counter to pay for my one sheet of paper - 200 reils (5p)!!
Just as I was about to hand over the vast sums asked for, a man just walked into the shop and shoved a phone at the woman serving me.This is the conversation!!
Man - Tell him where I am
Woman serving me!! - (looking upset) sorry?
Man (louder) - Tell him where I am
Woman - Khmer?
Man - Yes
Woman - Talked in Khmer to the person on the phone and then said - he will pick you up in 15 minutes.
He grabbed the phone and left.
I have never been more ashamed that I cannot speak Khmer. I thanked her for helping him and thanked her for serving me.
I don't know what had happened to him today, it could be he was at the end of his tether but it was not her fault that he couldn't communicate with his driver!!
