Mum was keen to visit the local Katherine Markets today, but we were a little disappointed on arrival with mainly food stalls - its saving grace was the old locomotive and historic Katherine railway bridge that provided us with a nice view up the river.
We then hot-tailed it to Cutta Cutta Caves (about 27km south of Katherine) to join the 1pm tour. It was great - beginning with a 600m walk around to the cave entrance where Linda, our guide, met us. There were a couple of wallabies around the entrance (apparently, that means there's probably a python in their abode!) Once in the cave we had to wait a few minutes for our eyes to adjust to the darkness. Then Linda guided us through the 200m of caves stopping at various times to point out beautiful limestone formations including stalagmites, stalactites, columns, curtains, etc. The end of the underground track is near some hot springs, so unlike most caverns, it's actually quite warm and humid (in the 1970's a caver attempted a Guinness world record and stayed down there for >60 days - crazy)!
In the afternoon, we stocked up at the local supermarket, and then had a late lunch at the local playground: it was a fantastic large undercover facility with great swings, slides, flying foxes for Renee & Eamon to enjoy. Katherine Springs was our next stop on the way home to freshen up - a lovely area for a swim with a little waterfall and a swinging rope and lots of trees around. It was a pleasure to enjoy the natural springs with local indigenous families too.
