We left Queenstown for two nights to head further south. Our first stop was Milford Sound which had been highly recommended to us. We drove through lots of big mountains with waterfalls on them then through a very narrow, reeeeally long dark tunnel called The Homer tunnel to get right into the middle of Milford sound. We had been advised that it's not worth doing the boat cruise unless the weather is really good, it was raining when we got there so we decided to save our pennies and go for a walk instead. The views of the mountains are incredible, but from seeing photos it does make a difference if it's a clear day and the weather was not good for us. The accommodation we were meant to be staying at that night was closed due to a land slide so we had to go to a nearby town to sleep called Te Anau.
The next day we went to Invercargill which is where you can catch a ferry over to Stewart island, we had also decided to give that a miss due to advice about the weather so we actually stayed in Invercargill which is pretty crap. It's very industrial and after seeing all the amazing places we have seen so far it seemed really rubbish! There was a cinema across the road from our hostel so we went to see Gravity in the afternoon rather than walk around in the cold!
The next morning our driver took us to a nearby town to see sea lions and penguins. We didn't get to see any penguins but the sea lions were so close to us which was pretty cool. We then headed back to Queenstown for another week of fun!
