We spent 2 nights in Kaikora and this was our final stop with the Stray bus! We opted to do a fishing trip because we had heard that you get to eat the fish you catch afterwards and get unlimited free wine...so it sounded like our kind of fishing trip! It was so random; at first we got dropped at a house and greeted by a guy with a wooden leg called Nick (a proper pirate!) then they took the first group off fishing and told us to just make ourselves at home, have a cup of tea and wait in his living room! We were a bit baffled but did as we were told! A couple of hours later it was our turn to go out on the boat, it was really good fun, the boat went really fast and was so bumpy it was hard not to fall over! We all caught lots of fish and Odette even managed to catch a little shark! We were out fishing for about an hour then had to go and collect Crayfish (lobsters) which get caught in a big cage. Back at the house they cooked the Crayfish for us and let us try some other weird things like Paua which looks kind of like big Oysters and Sea Urchin eggs. I can't say it was delicious but it was cool to try new things! The Crayfish and the fish we caught were delicious though, as was the free wine! We all ended up quite tipsy and went to a couple of bars before heading back to the hostel. The next day me and Oddy went for a walk along the coast and our fishermen friends saw us walking along the road and picked us up, they said they knew some people travelling to Christchurch the next day and sorted out a free lift for us which was amazing as we were planning to take a public bus, then they let us go out on the boat again to collect more Crayfish! So we were like BFF's with pirate Nick! They were such nice guys and we had so much fun experiencing fishing for the first time!
