Punakaiki was our next cultural stop, the accommodation there was lots of little holiday homes so we split into groups of 10-12 people and each group shared a house. Splash recommended for everyone to cook in each house, so our group decided to make Fajitas for dinner. The house was really lovely, nothing like dorms or a hostel so it was a nice change! There were 3 rooms in our house; 2 rooms had 5 single beds and one was a private double room - me and Odette were lucky and got the double room! Our dinner was delicious, then everyone else gathered in our house for drinks and games afterwards. The activity on offer for the next day was a bit lame (bone and jade stone carving) so we opted out! We had a 10 minute walk to the bus in the morning in the worst weather ever! It was raining so hard and we didn't have waterproof covers for our bags so we had to run (uphill!) with our big bags on our back to avoid them getting totally soaked! We stopped at the pancake rocks and blowholes on the way to Franz Josef which is a natural rock formation that looks like layers of pancakes! The water is really rough and every couple of minutes it blows through holes in the rocks and looks like a chimney with smoke blowing out of it and makes a really loud rumbling noise. When we got to Franz we were told the weather forecast was rubbish so it was unlikely we'd be able to do the glacier walk. As me and oddy have got some spare time available we decided to stay in Franz Josef for 3 more nights after the bus left to wait for an improvement in the weather so we could do the walk. Luckily when we checked in we opted to upgrade to a nicer room so we had a tele with sky movies on which helped us pass the time in the crappy weather! The hotel also had a giant hot tub which could fit 20 people so we spent some time in there and I found a spa down the road and had my eyebrows done! We finally got to do the glacier walk on Monday and it was so worth waiting for! We got a helicopter to 2000 ft up the glacier, then did a 3 hour trek in the ice. There was lots of little cracks and caves that we could squeeze through and one cave that you could go in and be completely surrounded by ice like an igloo! We got the helicopter back to the ground and then went to the glacier hot pools to warm up! We cooked risotto for dinner then went for a few drinks. We forgot to lock the door to our room on the way back in and at 4am I was awoken by an extremely drunk Russian man trying to get into my bed because he thought it was his room! It took 3 of us a good 5 minutes to convince him it's not his room and make him leave!!
