This morning we were awoken by the DOC camp ranger at 8:15am, banging on our window to collect our $14 fee! Normally we don't pay for DOC sites but we couldn't get away with it this time, so Laura paid up! We couldn't get back to sleep after that so we drove into town and had another couple of hours online.
For lunch, we decided to go to the famous Fergburger - known throughout NZ for its amazing burgers and it definately lived up to its reputation! The place was tiny, with only a few tables but it's been constantly packed every time we've walked past! Laura chose the 'Cheif Wiggum' with pork belly and hash brown and mustard sauce, whereas I had a Double Ferg with cheese, plus chips to share. Turns out we didn't need the chips as the burgers were HUGE and delicious!
Feeling very full, we walked down towards the lake and stopped at a bar called Monty's for a beer to wash our burgers down! Then it was time for our 2pm tirp on the Kawarau Jet. We got kitted out with life jackets and rain coats and got in the boat with a big group of Maoris and a few others. We started with a spin around the lake and our first 360 degree spin! Me and Laura were sat in the front row on our own, which meant each time we did a spin, we slid across the boat, hitting the driver on the side! The driver didn't seem to mind, and kep asking us both if were ok. We then went down the Kawarau River and under a bridge, with the driver taking us too close to the supports! A few more spins and we were onto the Shotover River famous for its narrow canyons and shallow water. After getting soaked again, we were on our way back to the dock, lots of fun and I'd do it again!
We then drove to our proper campsite for the night, about 10 minutes walk from town, for a shower, before heading into town for the rugby. We found a bar called Malbas who were serving $2.50 pints between 4pm and 7pm - definitely the cheapest beer we've had in NZ - so we ended up staying there for both games - Ireland v Wales was first - a close game but Wales led throughout and deserved their semi-final spot. We'd been joined at our big table by Nick from Wales and Paul from London, who are both here for the rugby, but live in teh Middle East in Saudi Arabia and Dubai. We got on well and it was interesting to hear about what it's like to live and work in strict Saudi!
The England game was a bit of a nightmare - we never really got going and we lost badly. We decided to head to the Buffalo Club to drown our sorrows, as we'd been given 2 for 1 wristbands by a Geordie promoter the day before! Nick and Paul joined us and we had a brilliant night, with way too many Jagerbombs involved!
