Today we hit the road again, with a few stops on our drive further down the east coast of the Northlands region. Our first stop was Kawakawa to see the famous toilets designed by Austrian-born artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser (who liked to meditate on the loo!). It's a small, unremarkable town with the most colourful toilets we've ever seen - lots of wavy lines decorated with ceramic mosaics and brightly coloured bottles! We only stayed for a few minutes, to use the loo and take pictures, then hit the road again.

Next stop was the glow-worm caves at Kawiti, we decided to go to these caves instead of the bigger attraction at Waitomo, further down the North Island, as these were a lot cheaper and were a small, family run business, rather than the massive money making place at Waitomo. It was well worth a visit, our Maori guide Angela was brilliant (even though she'd only been doing the job for 3 weeks), and it was amazing to see all the glow-worms on the ceilings of the cave, and to see the formations in the cave itself. After a 30 minute tour we had to walk back over the hill(!) back to the car park.

Next stop was Whangerai Falls, the most impressive waterfall we've seen so far, and then we parked up in the town. We were on the hunt for a Vodafone shop, which we found straight away, and bought a sim card which will mean we can call home for $2 an hour! We made a quick stop at the library to use the internet before heading out of Whangerai and to our home for the night, and the first DOC (Departmentof Conservation) campsite we've stayed at - Uretiti Beach. The site was very nice and although the toilets were 'pit' style, they had a fancy ventilation system so they didn't smell at all! We met an Irish couple while we were cooking tea, and chatted to them about how cold it was!

We spent a few hours reading, then gave up as our hands were too cold out of the covers holding our books! Definately one of the coldest nights so far!
