This morning we drove on towards Kaikoura, and on the way we stopped at Ohau Stream, near where we'd stopped on our first time through two months ago! This time we found a place where NZ fur seals travel upstream to a waterfall, where the seal pups play while their mothers are out at sea finding food (don't know where the lazy Dads are…). We found a few seals at the mouth of the stream, playing with the leaves in the water. We then walked further upstream until we reached the waterfall, where we were met with dozens of seal pups splashing, jumping and playing around in the water. It was an amazing sight - one of many since we arrived here!
Back on the road, we drove to Kaikoura and stopped at the I-site, where we booked an exciting trip for tomorrow - swimming with the dolphins in the Ocean! By this point we were starving and we'd read about a Thai place doing $10 lunch specials in the LP, so we headed there and enjoyed a Thai Green Curry and Garlic Chicken (that one was mine, and I stunk of garlic for the rest of the day - tasty though!).
After lunch, we drove to a DOC site 9km out of Kaikoura for some free camping. When we arrived, there were only a couple of vans there, but by evening the small site was packed - everyone likes a free site! We even had a visit from the police, but they were just checking that everyone was behaving themselves!
Eventually, we settled down for an early night - 7am start for us tomorrow!
