Happiness Is The Road
After brekky we went to explore the Orleans Bay area. We drove the short distance to Little Wharton Beach. It was a gorgeous windswept little bay full of dramatic and rugged natural beauty. There were rocky outcrops, white sand and crashing waves forming in the crystal clear turquoise waters that were pounding the rocks. We had the place completely to ourselves which was brilliant and we scrambled over the rocks and walked on the crunchy snow like sand as we made our way around the bay. It was wonderful to be on our own and be able to enjoy just the sounds of nature. No woop wooping here thank goodness! After this we drove over to the other side of the headland and parked up at Big Wharton Beach which was a massive curling dramatic beach with huge breakers rumbling and powering in to the shore. It was an awesome sight. We went for a little walk here and soaked up the atmosphere. We absolutely love this sort of rugged coastal scenery and it is great knowing that there is loads more stuff like this to come on the way back to Perth. Again we were completely on our own. The place was deserted which we loved. From here we made our way back up to the main highway and headed west back in the direction of Esperance and towards Cape Le Grand National Park. As we left Big Wharton Beach it was threatening rain and half way to Cape Le Grand it absolutely hammered it down. It was still chucking it down when we got to a very rain soaked National Park. When I was last here back in November it was hot and sunny. It looked like a different place today. It was still magnificently beautiful though. We made our way through to the Lucky Bay campground which was much quieter this time around. There were only two other caravans there when we arrived. We ploughed through all the puddles and opted for site 13 which was on the edge of the camp with a tremendous view of the sea and the bay. We had some lunch and by the time we had finished the rain had cleared. We went for a walk down to the beach. I was very keen for Jay to see the kangaroos that last time I was here were mooching about on the beach. There was not a single kangaroo around today and we were both a bit disappointed. They had probably taken shelter from the rain and hopefully would be here later. We had a walk along the stunning beach and around the bay. The sand is a pristine white and the ocean is a vibrant turquoise. We had the beach to ourselves apart from a couple of ladies who we saw halfway along. They were also staying on the campground and they had come to the beach to look for whales. Between now and October is the best time of the year to see migrating whales swim past and it would great to see them again. I remember being lucky enough to see one when I was sat listening to music at Canal Rocks. It was incredible. The ladies hadn't spotted any whales today and nor did we but there is a good chance we might see them on the rest of our travels back to Perth. They had, however, seen kangaroos earlier on in the day so they were about somewhere. Just a little elusive today it would appear. We walked half way around the bay and back without seeing any roos. The only wildlife we did see were the dreaded mosquitos. We left our door open too long at dusk and before we knew it we had been invaded. There were about ten of the little stealth *******s in the van but with the aid of our torch and a book they all got splattered. Not before we'd been bitten though. But never mind as this is a small price to pay for living an idyllic work free and stress free lifestyle. We are both enjoying the freedom of travelling and consider ourselves to be very lucky. We went to sleep to the beautifully relaxing sound of the waves feeling lucky at Lucky Bay.
