Happiness Is The Road
The forecast was for dry weather today but when we got up it was still raining. We decided to go and see the spectacular Tondirrup National Park whatever and hoped that the rain would ease. We had decided to stay at the same caravan park for another two nights as they had an offer that if you stayed for four nights you only paid for three. I went to the reception to book us in for two more nights expecting this task to be quick and simple. It wasn't. The lady on reception said that we couldn't take up the offer as we hadn't requested it when we checked in and that our tariff couldn't be changed on the computer! I stated that this wasn't very fair and so she went to ask the manager. He came out and reiterated there was nothing he could do!!!! I then told him that we'd probably go elsewhere. He didn't seem bothered about this. The campsite was virtually empty and he was turning away business. What an idiot and what a terrible way to run a business. Before we checked out Jay left them a review on Trip Advisor:-
'We stopped for two nights on a powered site. We decided due to rain that we'd stay a couple more nights and after discovering on their website that they had a discount offer my partner went to sort it out. He was told that because he hadn't taken this offer out initially they weren't able to change the tariff on the computer and therefore we would have to pay the full rate. When my partner initially paid, he advised the receptionist that we would probably be staying longer but weren't offered this deal. My partner pointed this out but it made no difference and no compromise was offered. Clearly you need to be psychic to know about their offers and on their website there is absolutely no mention that this offer only applies on first arrival. My partner advised he would discuss this with me but that we would probably leave but they were more than happy to watch him walk out the door and so clearly didn't want our custom, which we gladly took elsewhere! We have been around the whole of Australia to over 300 campsites in 12 months and never has anyone not been able to change a computer before. Quite unbelievable. If they can't deal with this then don't be optimistic they'll deal with any of your other problems sympathetically!'
We drove down the road to Middleton Beach and had brekky in the car park there. The rain was now intermittent. We had a quick look at the rainswept beach and then we drove to the national park which was just a few kilometres away. I came here back in November but today with the inclement weather the park was wilder and more dramatic. We went to have a look at the blowholes first. The path to them took us down to the oceans edge where the water blew through crevasses in the granite rock that stretched down to the sea. The wind was gusting around us and although it had stopped raining we were still getting wet as the wind was blowing the sea spray over us. The swell was big and the waves were huge crashing against the rocks on the shore with a brutal force. The scenery was rugged and wild with nature putting on an awesome show for us. We couldn't get too close to the blowholes as with the sea swelling so high and the wind gusting around us it looked dangerous. We watched from a distance and nothing much happened but then suddenly..... WHOOOOOOOSH!!!.... a massive swell hit the rocks and a huge torrent of sea water spurted up in a big arc absolutely drenching us in the salty spray. We then walked back to the car park and got back just in time to miss a big shower as the clouds opened up again. As we drove off we saw a most beautiful rainbow over the ocean. We then went to the car park for the gap and the natural bridge. Again due to the wind and the high swell the scene before us was highly dramatic. We spent ages here getting wet with the spray and marvelling at these two natural wonders. Waves were smashing into the gap and splurging up the sides causing cascade upon cascade of foaming water. The sea was churning up at the entrance to the gap and the whites and aquamarine colours of the water were stunning. Waves were also blasting through into the natural bridge in the rock. This was the wildest place we have been to on our travels and we loved it. We then went to Stony Hill and went on a lovely circular walk that afforded us with stunning views of the national park and the ferocious ocean. From here we drove to Misery Beach where we very happily had some lunch and dodged another massive rain shower. After this we went to Frenchman Bay where there was a lovely beach and turquoise waters. The weather seemed to be getting a bit brighter now with a lot more blue showing and the clouds looking less threatening. We'd had an incredible day in this amazing and rugged national park. We now had to find somewhere to stay the night and decided to give the Albany Gardens Holiday Resort a go. It was very close to the centre of Albany and near an industrial area but it was quiet and we relaxed here for the rest of the day.
