Today was going to be a big ride. Not so much for us but for Shirl who had completed a couple of high 300 - 400 k rides over the last few days. This was a 500 k ride and it was going to be warm as well. So off we headed and was had been a previous great ride suddenly got very boring. Straight roads with very minimal scenery. Our hope was that this wasn't going to be the case all the way to Esperance. We already had breakfast at Albany so it was straight in for the ride. We covered around 120 ks before we stopped at a place called Boxwood Hill. A tiny roadhouse and we nearly rode past it and had to go back. We were enjoying a coffee when our new found mate from Broome rocked up. Joe on his KYM 640. He had stayed at Denmark the night before and got off about 7.30 am. We ended up jumping in with Joe's pace and followed him for some time. We were both heading to Esperance. We cracked along the boring stretch to Ravensthorpe before having another break. We fuelled the bikes and decided to have lunch. Joe was inhaling a pastie he brought from the BP and wanted to keep going. We said our goodbye and off he went. Meanwhile we relocated to a small roadside café and had a great meal. The road got even worse as we encountered more and more roadworks which slowed us to 40 k/h. We decided to have a short stop at Munglinup which left us around 100 ks to Esperance. Shirl had declined the generous offer made by Johny to purchase her an Airhawk seat top to make her ride more comfortable. She was now paying the price. I did make a point in stating how spectacular my airhawk seat was performing. Regrets….
Arrival into Esperance found us being bombarded with scooters. They were everywhere. We ended up at the Pink Lake park where their prices soon had me staying back in the tent and John and Shirl in a shoebox cabin. Camp was soon set up and we went shopping.
We had a nice BBQ at the camp kitchen with some salad and beer. Johny cooked it to perfection. Unfortunately the storm that had been predicted appeared and we rushed to hide all our stuff which was out drying.
Looks as though another wet night is on the way. But that's camping. Tomorrow is a short day to enable a washing day so we will only pop out two hundred to Norseman.
