These last few days have been spent camping at Yulara and visiting Uluru-Kata-Tjuta National Park. While Jarrod and I have been here before we were excited to show Tully the big rock. Day 1 we visited Kata-Tjuta (the olgas) and did a reasonably short walk along the Valley of the Winds. Very impressive scenery, the longer walks really do allow you to see more but we were struggling with Tully to even walk a kilometre so no chance of that. We headed to Uluru after lunch to see if the climb was open. Jarrod had been disappointed during our last visit here that it was closed every day. So he was hoping that this visit he would be able to. As luck would have it the climb had been opened so he was off. Tully had fallen asleep so I was lucky enough to have to stay with my feet firmly on the ground with him. Once Tully did wake up we both walked up to chicken rock and sat to wait for Jarrod to descend. On all reports and from the photos the climb proved amazing. And Jarrod was pleased to have had a better experience than the time his parents dragged him up screaming all the way. That afternoon we enjoyed some luxury having a drink at the 5 star Sails Hotel before retreating back to the van to try and keep warm. The days have been good here but the nights still bitterly cold. Our fire pit has been getting good use but we have all been struggling to keep warm overnight in minus 2 degree temps. Day two we decided to combat another cold night by running the base of Uluru. This 10 km circuit was brilliant. Jarrod pushed Tully all the way in the pram and he soaked up the scenery with very few complaints. Took us about an hour and we felt very accomplished at the end. We had a lazy afternoon and met up with a family we had met in Alice. We chatted to them by the campfire and their boys toasted marshmallows with Tully. Day three we returned to Uluru to walk the sections of the base that were not part of the running circuit. The sections closer in with rock art and waterholes. We struggled again with Tully today after a late night and early morning so headed back to camp for lunch and a rest. Later in the day we visited the camel farm and soaked up the last images of this magical place. Continue south tomorrow.
