Arrived into Kakadu and set up camp in Jabiru. Great caravan park, only 15 sites all with private ensuites. Great base to explore. Our first day was spent in the East Alligator region of the park and we did a short walk around the rock art site at Ubirr. Tully loved the pictures and enjoyed clambering up rocks to reach the lookout. Lunch at Cahills Crossing, the road/water crossing between Kakadu and Arnhem Land. Didn't look too treacherous, a few cars getting across with no worries. Day two took us into the Nourlangie Region and was a bit more scenic. We did 4 different lookouts, testing Tully's endurance but overall came back to camp with a sense of disappointment. I think we have been far too spoilt up the coast, through the Pilbara and Kimberley. The scenery here is nice, but nothing on what we've seen. Moved down to Cooinda on Day three, and did a short walk along the boardwalk onto Yellow Water. This was more of the Kakadu we were expecting. With a huge expanse of wetlands. Still no crocs though. The Caravan Park was packed with people as we hit the wave of school holiday travellers. Day four we moved to the Mary River Region, the southern end of the park. We set up the van at the Mary River Road House and drove back to Gunlom. This was a 500m steep climb with a really impressive series of plunge pools at the top. We swam around in the beautiful clear water, grateful not to see any crocs here. From here we made another stop on the recommendation of the roadhouse owner. We turned off the highway up a very rocky track to find a beautiful waterfall and deserted swimming hole. Finally we think we have seen the better parts of Kakadu feeling happier about this and also glad to leave the busy pace of caravan parks. Onward south, to Edith Falls.
