Day 18 - Arrack Attack
So normally I write this as we get into bed at the end of the day.. However as we did not get into bed untill 9.30am I am writing this the following day! We ended up having as rather eventful evening!
The day was pretty good too, we went into hospital and went straight to A&E to see what we could observe, there were no other students there which was a bonus and the consultants were lovely and very welcoming! The A&E unit was relatively new compared to the main building, it had been funded by Australia and up untill a few months ago Australian doctors were coming out here to train and help staff. There is a main ward and then a resus area with 4 beds and all emergency equipment, this area was also air conditioned so we spent a lot of the day in there! It had 2 patients who should have been on intensive care but due to bed shortages they were being cared for in resus. One was a severe asthma attack with query cardiogenic shock, the other was a really interesting case that we would never see in the UK it was a 57 year old lady who had an ASD, atrial septal defect (hole in the heart between the 2 atria), she had refused surgery a few months ago and the flow had started to reverse having serious consequences, the X-rays showed a massively enlarged heart and when feeling her chest there was an obvious heave which is rare. The doctors were not hopeful for her recovery, her care was more supportive. We also saw a man be admitted unconscious and when checking blood sugar they were very low, so he had hypoglycaemia, it was good to see him wake back up so suddenly when dextrose was given through the cannula. We also saw a dead person, but missed he cardiac arrest, this was the first time i'd seen a dead body. We also spent a little time on the ward and were given some brilliant teaching by one of the emergency registrars. One of our most interesting hospital days and we stayed in until 12.30 think that's a record! Got the bus back and had an afternoon kip, before we went surfing, the surf was knackering, good work out!
We had decided that as there is such agood big group of us now staying in beach haven hostel we should go and try out jungle beach party which happens every Wednesday, so we went and got some arrack which is the local spirit not even sure what it is, some mix of rum, tequila and whiskey, tasted good with ginger beer! We all had pre drinks on our balcony there was quite a lot of us, the other warwick girls, the Edinburgh students and 2 German guys. Left here at about midnight to try and find a tuk tuk, harder than we though at that time, we all squashed into 3 tuk tuks and set off for jungle beach, we didn't really know what to expect, it was up and down a massive hill in the middle of nowhere literally in a jungle, the tuk tuks dropped us off at the road then we had to make our way down a windey path to the beach.. We were just following the music! It was amazing... Very hard to describe but there was a big dance floor a bar the beach good music, fire throwing, so much fun. All the 26 Bristol students were there too, and we ended up being invited back to their villa for an after pool party, their villa was also I the middle of nowhere and a pool party seems like agood idea untill you realise we had no bikinis... That didn't stop us! Eventually at around 6ish we tried to go to sleep on the sofas, probably only slept an hour or so and we thought we had better make our way back to the hostel. Got back had breakfast and finally got Into bed... Great day!
