Day 16 & 17 - Back to Hospital...
Monday-
First day in medicine today, so we were in a different hospital, The main teaching hospital, we didn't have a clue which ward we were meant to be on so saw a white person and followed! Got to our ward and mets lots of other elective students, there were 2 from Manchester uni, 3 Edinburgh students (who are also staying in our hostel) and lots from Bristol, there are 26 students from Bristol who have a villa with a pool and chef, sounds amazing very jealous! Spent the morning following the very busy ward round once again straining our ears to hear the Sri Lankan whispers! There is a male and a female ward where we are based, all is open air and there are some patients on the floor! After the ward round we went and listened to a lady's heart who had a mitral regurgitation murmur and she had a very large thyroid gland goitre. Only stayed untill about 11.30 then got a very busy bus home!
Had a break at hostel for a while, appreciated the air con for half an hour, then went for an iced coffee for lunch! Then headed to sahanna beach for a spot of surfing, we hadn't been in a week!! We got back to the fort in time for sunset and turtles
It was Nadine's last night so we went out for a nice dinner and then went to pilgrims for a few drinks, and were joined by the students from Edinburgh.
Tuesday-
Back into hospital for ward round where we can't hear anything followed by some teaching on paracetamol poisoning and TB which was quite interesting. We had an appointment to see the professor of obs and Gynae to get signed off, so we went but ofcourse it was not that simple... We had to wait for him and then weren't allowed to actually see him we had to communicate via 3 women who wouldn't let us see him, it's all very strange and hierarchical, everyone seems absolutely petrified of him, we did get it all signed In the end and just went straight into his office to say thank you much to the disgust of his co-workers!!
Headed straight to sahanna beach for surfing, the Edinburgh students were there too, had a really good surf the waves were knackering, so difficult to get out, a good work out! We then went for dinner with the other students - classic Indian hut. Hopefully tomorrow will be our last day in hospital!
