Day 25 - Choo Choo.. All aboard
The mist and cloud had cleared by morning after a very comfortable sleep listening to monkeys crawl across the roof! The very lovely owners of the guesthouse had packed us up a breakfast of sandwiches, roti and fruit and had laid out some tea for us before we left to limb 'little Adam's peak'. It was a 3km walk uphill to the top with spectacular views, we were escorted by 3 very lovely doggies, they followed us all the way to the top and part of the way back down before getting distracted by some children! On the way up we saw some tea plantation pickers, some cows strolling up the path and the Sri Lankan national bird, the jungle fowl aka a chicken. We were quicker than expected so ended up eating our packed lunch back at the guesthouse along with more tea and some traditional new year snacks! After breakfast and a game of cards with Nihal we headed off in the van to the train station, just before though Nihal have us each a necklace made of seashells that his wife had made, they were very pretty and we kept them on all day!
From the train station we caught the observation train to Nuwara Eliya through the beautiful hill country, the views were just amazing, we were on the train about 2.5 hours, Nihal drove and met us there with all our bags, he is the sweetest man, like our guardian angel looking after us! We went to check in to our hostel which is very basic, not great but only here for one night. We then went for a stroll around the lake and the town, Nihal had realised what makes us happy... Food, so he know to point out all the Sri Lankan delicacies and we tasted just about every type of street food we could find! We ended up in a pub called 'The Pub' it was a quirky 3 story building where we were the only women and the into white people! Nihal knew the owners though and he order a massive 2L beer tap of lion beer, and some chickpea nibbles! When we left the pub it was getting dark and it got quite chilly I actually got goosebumps for the first time in 4 weeks, we headed to a local restaurant/greenhouse where we had kottu for dinner and an arrack cocktail!
Getting up at 5 tomorrow so back for an early night again, Nihal is so cute he looks after us so well and is really helpful for organising what we want to do and recommending things for us, he is well worth having, making our trip :)
