We got picked up and taken to a lovely coach where mine and dans seats were the ones by the door so we had loads of leg room. After 5 mins though we got transfered to a not as nice bus with no leg room! It started pouring it down just as we arrived in Phnom Penh luckily the guesthouse offered free pick up so there was a man waiting with my name. We arrived and decided that we would book the city tour for the next day and set off to have a look of the river and try and find the boat into Vietnam. As we were walking to the river Dan fell and hurt his ankle luckily it was nothing serious though. We managed to book our boat and decided to have a beer as its only 50 cents. However children and disabled people kept begging and so we decided to go back to the hotel.
The next day our tour started with the genocide s21 museum. We bought a tour guide for $6 as Dan said he regretted not getting a tour at Auswitchz. The place was haunting over 20,000 people died in this prison alone and only 7 survived. It used to be a school but when the khmer rouge took over and made it into a prison they used the exercise bars outside as torture tools hanging people upside down by their feet. They had a few rooms with beds in and on the wall was a picture of that exact room with a dead body on the bed. Another building had tiny cells still intact with blood on the floor. Of the 7 that survived 2 are still alive and they were both there signing books. We turned down one book but couldnt say no twice so bought his. It was quite amazing to see them as they are getting old now (81 and 78) so soon they will be dead. There were photos up on every wall showing people who were jailed and also dead people. After this we went to the killing fields which are the fields that the people in the jail came to when they were going to die. In the middle of the field they have a huge temple full of skulls and bones of everyone that died there. The field themsleves still had bone fragments and peices of clothing on the floor. There was also a tree that was used to kill babies by smashing their head against the tree. It was horrible but informative and astonishing to say it happened so recently. After this we bought a coconut and got the tuk tuk to the national museum . It was full of old buddhas and vishnus they'd mostly found at angkor wat they were impressive but theres too many to really appreciate them . We went for lunch as the palace didnt open till two, the palace was really impressive its the little photo on the blog. We couldnt believe how nice it was for a poor country who went through genocide 35 years ago. There we went to the silver pagoda which had an emerald buddha though we're pretty sure it was made of jade not emerald as it was pretty big! There was also a buddha made entirely of gold and diamonds it was the size of a child and weighed 90kgs. We finished the tour early and went back to the hostel luckily as the rains started. After the rains we went to buy me some flip flops as mine had broken just before the tour started, I managed to find some in the biggest size they did but they were all too small for Dan and we're hoping his will last until we can find some! We went back to the hostel to eat as its expensive here and packed ready for the boat tomorrow.
