We had a woman opposite us on the night train that was giving herself a massage but she just looked like she was beating herself up, constantly slapping and punishing herself all over, the train was really really hot because our carriage didn't have the air con switched on for some reason. This train was quite empty which was nice, although the carriage did end up looking like a dump site still. We got off the train not really knowing how to get to Hong Kong but there were signs which pointed to Hong Kong in the station and it was really easy. We went through immigration but was gutted by the fact that they don't stamp passports anymore, but instead get a little ticket. We proceeded through to get the metro to the centre of town and you could tell the difference from China immediately, everything was clean, civilised, organised, laid out well, English signs, no one was shouting or spitting or pushing or shoving, it felt like being at home for a moment.
We found our accommodation the chunking mansions which was a huge building filled with little corridors which had hostels, restaurants, clothes shops, electronics shops, money changers..everything, it was like a self contained city completely full with Indian people, it was crazy. It was a bit confusing because there were two sides to the building, which you couldn't cross between except for on the ground floor so we had to make sure we got the right lift on the right side. We found our sides which had two lifts, one lift went to even numbered floors, the other went to odd. There was a huge queue for both because despite the size of the building each lift could only hold 4 people before an alarm went off to say too much weight. These tiny lifts which went from floor one to 14 and back down had to be used for everything including taking stock up and bringing lift fulls of rubbish down.
We went to floor 7 which our hostel said to, but a guy there told us reception was on 10 so we had to walk up. This reception was reception for about 10 different hostels all with different names which was suspicious.
The receptionist was an old Indian man who didn't have a clue what he was doing but a younger girl helped us. We then got taken down to the 6th floor where our room was in a flat only recently converted into a hostel, there was a lot of Indian people just sleeping on the floor in one of the rooms.
We went out to look for somewhere to eat for lunch but everywhere was very expensive and a lot of places were shut, so we went to McD's where we got a big Mac meal for £1.75! After this we went and sat by the river for a bit in the sweltering humidity, you could hardly see the other side of the river because it was so hazy and humid. We then went back to the hostel and put away our washing that was hung up to dry from the previous day.
We headed out for dinner to an Indian place, the curry we ordered was mediocre but after China it tasted delicious, especially the chicken in it that wasn't horrible and didn't have any bones in it, we planned to watch the laser light show at 8 but we missed it by the time we had eaten.
We met two girls in our hostel from Wales that had just arrived and started their trip in Hong Kong. They were nice but it was their first time travelling so didn't know much, we were talking for a while in the room and discovered a lot of bed bugs, we sprayed all over to try and kill them all but then the spray ran out so I asked one of the men working there for another can, he said there was no bed bugs but pointed out loads to him so then he went to get some. We decided to go to Macau the next day with the two girls and went to bed reluctantly after all the bed bugs.
We woke up and got showers and then all headed out to get the ferry which was quite easy, we bought some sandwiches on the way to eat on the boat for breakfast. The crossing was smooth and quite quick into Macau.
We wanted to head into the centre of town from the ferry terminal so got one of the free casino shuttle buses to a casino close by where we wanted to go. The casino we went in was a huge, really impressive sky scraper and we felt a bit out of place in there but we soon headed out again.
The heat in Macau was sweltering, it was really humid and really sunny it was difficult to breathe in the sun. Macau was very nice though with a lot of Portuguese architecture mixed with Chinese, Macau was also nice because it was very different to China, we even got a welcome to Macau text which said no spitting or littering. The other girls went to see some pandas and we walked around town, got an ice cream and took it quite easy. When we were done in town we went back to the casino nearby, got the free shuttle bus back to the ferry terminal and then a different casino bus to the Venetian hotel.
The Venetian hotel was mind blowingly big, we walked through a side entrance and was walking for about 10 minutes before we got to the casino. The tables in the casino had minimum bets of at least £50 and went up to £15,000 just on a standard table, not even the VIP tables or the high betting room. We walked through to the canal which had a massive canal with gondolas sailing through, very expensive designer shops and expensive restaurants.
We ate at a food court where we got a cheap Chinese meal and then spaghetti bolognese with potato wedges which tasted amazing. You could have stayed in there for days and not seen all of it but we went and got the free shuttle back to the ferry as we were running out of time. Once at the ferry we then got the MGM free shuttle to have a look in, this was also very impressive but we didn't stay too long. After leaving here we walked past the Wynn casino and watched the water show, which was the same as the one in las Vegas but also included fire!
We finished up in the Grand Lisboa which was the first casino we went to as we wanted to gamble there, we signed up as members and got a free chip keyring, it took a while for us to know what was going on as all the tables were Chinese games, not even blackjack. We finally sat down at an electronic roulette table (we couldn't afford the minimum bet for the real table) and got 10 Macau dollars up to 80, but then lost it again and also lost 10 in a fruit machine, but it was fun and we only lost about £1, which I'm sure we made up for in shuttle buses.
We got the free shuttle back and got a slightly earlier ferry to Hong Kong which was lucky as we just made the last metro train to our hostel.
When we opened the door to our hostel we thought we were on the wrong floor because there was some different people in our room, but then the owner showed us to another room where all of our stuff had been moved to. The reason being that they had completely painted all the rooms and bought all new bunk beds because of the bed bugs, we were happy with it but the other girls were not as a lot of their stuff went missing (I was also missing a flip flop, just one). We slept much easier that night as the room was ten times better, and I Also got my flip flop back.
