My worst fear has occurred. I have broken down on a motorway in the pouring rain. Green flag said I had to find an SOS phone somewhere on the motorway as the French have to do this. I started to walk but not seeing any sign of a phone, doubled back and walked off the slip road to an ordinary road. There was nothing open about to get help it is a special holiday time when all businesses close.
I flagged down a car with GBG (Guernsey) number plate and they kindly stopped. We tried to find a number for the SOS but in the end they drove on to the motorway to find one which was a few kms along. I called from there and someone was sent. That part was quite quick as I was actually almost next door as the crow flies but about 10ks round trip by road.
It seems that The alternator is broken. I had noticed a weird noise but there are absolutely no garages open. Then just turning on to the motor way the battery light came on and I couldn't steer. Just managed to pull into the side. Quite scary.
After several telephone calls with Green Flag there is the suggestion that I will be 'repatriated'. The timing may be difficult with the ferry tomorrow morning. We shall see.
Now I am in a yard with loads of broken down and crashed vehicles. So maybe I am lucky.
I am now in sunny Roscoff next to the line of waiting vehicles. There is the Tour de France sailing race and tents and festivities in the ferry port. I walked into town and looked at my special spot I would have parked in and was pleased to see that it was still available. Roscoff is such a pretty little place for a ferry port.
