We left Perth and stopped at Bunbury to visit the Dolphin Discovery Centre. We saw turtles, fish, lobsters, octopus, but the one thing we did not discover was a Dolphin....apparently they don't always come in to the bay. I guess it wasn't our lucky day. We went a little further up the beach and had lunch. After lunch we headed for a free camp at Capel.
The next morning we headed in the pouring rain to Margaret river. We had only gone a kilometre up the road before we noticed our slide out BBQ had decided to randomly come out...luckily we didn't hit any white posts or people. With our BBQ secured we hit the road again.
We arrived in Margaret river just before lunch and set up camp. This was the first caravan park I had an ensuite...this was such a treat. Being on the road for over three months makes you miss your own bathroom :)))
It was mums birthday so we had a nice lunch and Ella and I made mum a Toblerone cheese cake..yum.
After lunch we drove out to Cowamarup. This place has about a million plastic cows in the street. It was home to the cow festival in 2010. Some of the cows are really funny. I had to ask a local how to pronounce the town name and you don't even say "cow" in it...go figure it's more like co-wam-a-rup....luke made me stand next to a cow that was decorated for Christmas and it said "moodolph" I think he was trying to say I was a moody cow.....
Our next stop was to a winery called Beeteny's, they also make all kinds of Nougat. Both the wine and Nougat were delicious. I bought a lovely coffee liquor.
To finish off the day we went for dinner at the Margaret River Hotel. It was a great night out.
The next morning we decided to visit one of Margaret Rivers caves. We went to the Lakes cave. Outside of the visitor centre there is a spectacular deck with three round sections made of glass. You can see right down to the caves below. Kaden loved theses circles and jumped from one to the other. It was quite frightening to walk out on them and hope that you didn't fall through. We took the tour of the Lakes cave and did the 300 stairs down. The cave is spectacular with lots of limestone stalactites and stalagmites growing. It is apparently one of the fastest growing caves in the world. After the cave tour we went back to the caravan for lunch before heading to Millers Ice cream farm. They have the most amazing ice cream, and they sell fresh from the cow milk, for drinking not bathing ;))))) on our way back to Margaret River we went along the coast road which takes you to Gracetown .This is the spot the surfer was killed a week ago. There have been four fatal shark attacks in this area. The water is a steely grey colour and the waves are amazing. You can tell why the surfers flock to this area to catch the perfect wave, despite the risk.
On our last day in Margaret River we headed south to Augusta. Our first stop was the Cape Leeuwin lighthouse. I was excited that we had made it from the top to the bottom of Western Australia. We did the self guided tour of the lighthouse with our audio aids, which Kaden thought were phones. Life at the lighthouse would have been really tough. The coastline is very rugged and windy, but spectacular. In the early days the women had to pump their water from the ocean using a water wheel. It would have been a slow and arduous task. We had lunch at the Augusta harbour then we headed for Hamelin Bay. Hamelin Bay was beautiful with gorgeous water and a boardwalk that goes for kilometres along the beach. There is also the remnants of an old timber jetty that was used for loading timber and collecting supplies. After a brief stop we headed back to Margaret River along the coast road. This drive weaves through a canopy of beautiful trees, it is amazing.
The next morning we packed up and headed for Walpole, the giant trees await...
