We left Karijini and made it to Tom Price mid morning. Tom Price is another mining town, similar to the others, however a little more isolated. We had morning tea and headed to another free camp half way to Exmouth.
The next morning we started the last leg to Exmouth. We arrived mid afternoon and set up camp. The next morning Mum and Dad arrived and it was Melbourne cup day. Although gambling doesn't seem to be a big thing in WA we bought some sweeps at the caravan park, and went out to a local pub for lunch. It was nice to watch the race at lunch time instead of missing it while you pick the kids up from school. After lunch we went to the Warf and had a look around. Followed by a stint by the pool in the afternoon.
The next day we packed a lunch and headed off to explore the Cape. Our first stop was the SS Mildura shipwreck. It is Located approx 20km north of Exmouth. The ship was carrying cattle south and foundered on reef in 1907. No lives were lost.
It was amazing to see the wreck in one piece after all those years in the water. Our next stop was The Vlamingh Head Lighthouse it is located 17km north of Exmouth . The Lighthouse overlooks Lighthouse Bay and has the distinction of being one of the few places in Australia where you can watch the sun rise and set. The Lighthouse was built in 1912.We drove up to the car park and you have a great view of the whole coastline. The lighthouse is amazing and the keepers and their families did it tough in the early days with twelve months between fresh food deliveries. I get excited to see a Coles after three days on the road :).
Our next stop was the Turtle centre. We learnt all about the turtles laying their eggs, their predators and the rules of observation ( all if which we had previously broken). We walked down to the beach and spotted a couple of turtles and a small reef shark.
We traveled a little further and stopped at the boat ramp. There were lots of fish and turtles in the water here.
Our final stop for the day was back south of Exmouth at Pebble beach. We drove into the beach, set up the canopies and had a great lunch. The guys did a bit of fishing but didnt have any luck. We spent a couple of hours just relaxing on our own private beach before heading back to town. We all had a quiet afternoon followed by more drinks in the afternoon ( yes I will definitely have to join a group when I get home;)).
Tomorrow we pack up and head for Coral Bay.
