We arrived in Broome late Friday afternoon, we set up the van and headed down to the beach. We were desperate to see and smell the ocean after so long in the red dirt. Cable beach is spectacular with beautiful white sand as far as the eye can see. The tide was right out but it was still amazing. We spent the next couple of days swimming in the beautiful pool and at the beach.
We were lucky enough to arrive in Broome when there was a full moon. This meant we would have the opportunity to see the staircase to the moon. This occurs when the moon rises over Roebuck Bay and creates a staircase effect. It only happens three nights each month between March and October, so our timing was perfect.
Before heading to see the moon we went to Guantheaume point which is the home of some fossilised dinosaur prints. You have to wait until the tide goes out and climb down on the rocks to see the prints. It was very cool. Then we headed up to the best vantage point and waited, with a thousand of our closest friends....the moon finally appeared in a burst of orange colour. When the moon had risen we were able to see four of the steps. It wasn't the whole staircase but was definitely special. We went back to this spot over the next couple of nights but the clouds made it difficult to see, so the first night was the best we were able to see.
Broome itself is very spread out, with very little structure. It's crown jewel is beautiful cable beach.
On our last day in Broome we took the kids to ride camels along Cable beach. They were so excited, I was just hoping that today wouldn't be the day for the camel to have a mental breakdown. I had never ridden a camel before and I was not prepared for the sudden lurch forward as the camel stood up. Thankfully I grabbed the bar before doing an embarrassing face plant in the sand...the handlers put Kaden and Ella on the same camel. I had visions of them having a big fight and the camel taking off up the beach, but they performed like angels. What's also interesting is part of the beach that the ride covers is also a nudist beach. I'm sure you can guess Luke's favourite part of the ride...it also meant I had to explain why the people up the beach had no clothes on to the children...it's hot in Broome :)
We finished the day with a trip to Broomes Sun City outdoor cinema. It was amazing to sit out on the deck chairs and watch a movie. Topped off by the fact that the cinema is right near the airport so planes randomly go over your head. We loved it!
Packing up tomorrow and heading for Barnhill station.
