We arrived in Barcelona last night and caught a bus in to the city. We were dropped off in Catalunya Square right in the heart. The place was a sea of people in every direction which is never great when you've got a big backpack on. We located the main street La Ramblas and were at our hostel within 5 mins. After climbing 6 flights of stairs there was nobody there to meet us even though we were on time. We made a phone call and had someone arrive so we could unpack and meet our baby cockroach friends. Nothing a good shoe can't fix though. We wandered back out for some dinner. Very hard being in a new city late at night looking for a cheap feed so we ended up spending more then we wanted on crappy food. Then back home for some more roach killin' and a good rest.
Today we were up and ready to tackle the city. Being Sunday most things are closed and that includes supermarkets and shops. So we wandered through the squares and narrow streets just breathing in the city. The gothic quarter is a step back in time and just amazing to feel and see the history everywhere. Buildings still standing from Roman times is something that you could never stop wanting to see.
We joined another free walking tour at 3pm run by an Aussie guy from Perth. Us bloody Aussies are everywhere. These tours always work in that you see a lot of stuff that you would never have noticed and you get to meet some great people. This was a great thing as Jac was feeling very homesick today. Often the best thing is to get out and busy rather then sitting at the hostel all depressed.
After the tour we headed back to the Travel Bar for a sangria. No bourbon but not a bad drink to be on all night. They have €1 meals at 8pm so we decided to hang around for a cheap meal. Think we will eat there all week at those prices. They also had a quiz night later so we decided we'd give that a shake. More free entertainment. We got talking to a couple of lovely Canadian girls, Jen & Alina. A few more drinks, a feed and some laughs and we had joined forces to take down these other quiz losers. Alas it was not to be. We stormed home to take second. We were disappointed but had a fun night & met plenty of awesome people. We'll take advantage of a cheap meal tomorrow night and probably a crack at beer pong. And this time there is no second place!!!
