It was beautiful again for our last day in Greece. We woke & had a pretty nice breaky at the hotel, then headed out to explore for the day. We made our way along the waters edge that was full of jellyfish, some of the biggest we had ever seen. There were also huge schools of fish swimming round like crazy, eating something we couldn't see. We made our way to the White Tower which was a fortification from the 15th century. Here we hopped on to a local tour bus & paid all of €2 each. Actually everything in Thessaloniki is super cheap. I guess that is a result of it not really being a tourist city & most Greek people can't afford much. We could get coffee & hotdogs for all of €1 each. So we joined the tour & it was probably lucky we did, we were the only ones on it in the morning. Our first stop was the church of Agios Dimitrious from the 5th century. We walked through & watched a bit of a baptism before returning to the street to buy some supplies. We then caught the bus again & made our way to the highest hill in the city & walked around the ancient fortress & city walls. Here we had amazing views back over Thessaloniki & across to Mount Olympus. Then we headed to the Vlatadon Monastery which was closed, but they did have a cage full of peacocks with one who loved to shake his tail feathers. It was then back to catch the bus & returned to the white tower. Time then for a wander through the Modiano fresh food market to stock up on fruit for the trip, followed by a cheap ass hotdog. We returned back to the hotel & grabbed our packs to wander to our bus stop. We were a little early so we polished off our strawberries as we passed the time. It wasn't surprising that when it arrived it was a beat up old 30 seater & we were the only westerners on it. It was about half full so we had seats to ourselves which was lucky as it was pretty warm, & the air con was, well, pretty s***, although that may have been because the heater was stuck on. But these are the experiences that make travel what it is. So we said goodbye to Greece & reveled in the fact we were now heading towards new territory for us. It took us an hour of better you not watch driving before we arrived at the border. We stopped on the Greek side for a short while so that the bus driver could get our passports stamped & we could get some much needed fresh air. All too soon though we were back in the furnace so we could drive another 100 metres to the Macedonian side where we sat & roasted for over an hour before getting our chance to have them let us in their country. If you do get detained though we noticed a casino on the Macedonian side. May as well contribute to their economy whilst they delay your life for a few hours. So finally we were underway again & the landscape changed almost immediately to beautiful lush green woods, lakes & mountain. The sun was starting to set but we did get to enjoy the surrounds for an hour. This also detracted from the roads where the Macedonians are about as good as the Greeks. It made for a few puckers. We finally arrived at 9.15pm, nearly 5 hours after leaving Thessaloniki, & made our way to the hostel. Being dark we had to go down unlighted backstreets to get to the place. We kept seeing groups of people down these lanes which makes you a little wary, although on walking up to them they were generally families & offered a smile. We checked in & headed back out to grab dinner at a restaurant recommended by the hostel. We didn't have any Denars so asked if we could pay with Euros which wasn't a problem. The menu seemed pretty cheap when we converted it but it surely couldn't be right. We ordered a beer, wine, salad & main meal each, however they just kept bringing out more & more food. I said to Jac we were getting scammed here & it would cost us. It was a great meal but when we asked for the bill then sure enough all the extras were on there. And it came to a grand total of.... €13. We left a couple euro tip & headed home full & happy. Really going to love these eastern European prices.
