QUICK UPDATE! -
COLOURWAR HAS JUST BEGAN! )(&$#)$*^&@#_!*(#@%($^&*B%NY$*(&@)(#
Ok, a little bit of background so know what I am on about.
Summer Camps over here are all about tradition, and one tradition almost every camp in America likes to keep is that of Colourwar. It is basically a competition between campers that goes for exactly six days near the end of a sleepaway camp. It has been said that colourwar at Camp Kweebec is the reason many children come back.
The whole camp is divided into two teams, based on the colours of the camp, which in this case is Blue and White and for six days the camp goes into extreme mode. All week sporting games and activites are played throughout the camp and points are tallyed up. And these sports games ( such as soccer, Hockey and Basketball to name a few) are super serious - Im talking kids crying after every game when they don't win.
There are lots of traditional games and activites that happen during this time, but one of the main ones is the fact that no one know when colourwar is going to start exactly. Not even any of the staff. This is what they call the Colourwar Break.
Each year at around the same time, Colourwar breaks by the means of a very speical event - One year it was Skydivers, one year is was a fake fire and then fireworks - even real live Elephants played a part one year. No one knows exaclty when these activies happen and there is even a competition for people to guess when it happens.
So for the last three days I have totally been on edge because of course I have wanted to capture every moment of the colourwar break. I was sleeping yesterday afternoon when one of my campers burst in yelling "it colourway" of course being the gullible person I am I literally fell out of bed, scrambled for my shoes and the camera and was halfway onto the oval before someone had the heart to stop me. Bloody Hell!
Anyway - the real colour war break was this morning. At approx 6 AM I hear a huge sound from outside and every got up in a flurry. The staff members where running around yelling at the top of their lungs " COLOURWAR BREAK" we all ran as fast as we could to the oval and there were two HUGE hot air baloons there being blown up.
It was fantasitc, just like the baloon festival in Canberra excapt this time I was able to go right up to the balloons to film. They LIfted off and threw out heaps of confetti which was so amazing - as the sun was rising our whole camp watched as the flosted away. It was magical ( I know I sound like an idiot but it was)
SO now I am in a rush writing theis blog because I don't know how much time I am going to have later today to write more, Ill try my best thought - Talk soon!
Ps - very excting week ahead!
