Amy's travels
Hello everyone,
Well we have been very busy since I last wrote. On Thursday afternoon we decided to go to Midvalley, a shopping centre in KL that we'd been told about. Little did we know that it is actually Asia's biggest shopping mall and as it was a bank holiday I would guess that it was Asia's busiest shopping mall. The train there was packed, as was the one home, and Helen lost a shoe down the side of the train onto the tracks in the rush! It was a really good shopping centre though but I think we might go back when it is less busy.
On Friday morning we arrived at the hospital at 8 am, as usual, and were immediately sent home to pack our bags to attend the 'renal unit 6th annual family camp' for the weekend. This is a weekend at a hotel for the doctors and staff at the renal unit and their families, as well as for renal patients and their families. We boarded a coach, under the impression that we were going to a conference centre in a hotel in KL. Four hours later we arrived at the idyillic Kuala Rompin, in the national park on the East Coast of Malaysia! The hotel was fantastic - set amongst jungle with it's own private deserted beach (pictures to follow soon) and with lots of outdoor activities. Our room had a separate living room (complete with TV and sofa) and bedroom, with a hot shower (our first one in a month!). I was particularly delighted to see cereal at the breakfast buffet - something I've missed a lot.
On the Friday afternoon we had a buffet lunch and then I went kayaking for the first time with a group of people at the conference. I got soaked but really enjoyed it. On Saturday there were talks in the morning for staff and patients about renal issues, followed by an afternoon of team sports on the beach. We joined in all the games and activities - relay races, egg catching and hitting coconuts with hockey sticks. We also made good use of the beautiful swimming pool.
Each evening there was karaoke. Everyone loves it here and all the adults and children took part. On the last night everyone kept asking us to do something and as neither of us have the voice of an angel we decided to do something a bit different and taught them all the 'macarana' dance, introducing it as a British tradition at parties! We had the whole room up and joining in and, despite being out of time to the music, people asked us if we taught dancing in England. We were begged for an encore so ended up teaching them the 'Saturday Night' dance as well.
So after a really busy weekend and a seven hour coach journey back from the family camp, we have spent the day today running a few errands and packing in preparation to fly to Penang tomorrow afternoon.
I hope you are all well and enjoyed the weekend,
Lots of love,
