Amy's travels
Greetings from Penang,
We arrived here after a getting a bus, followed by a train, followed by another bus, followed by a flight, then another bus and then a walk to our hostel! The flight was great as it was so short that no sooner had you gone up you were coming down again, and as we didn't go very high I had a great aerial view of Malaysia from my window seat.
Georgetown, the main town on the island, is much more traditional in appearance than KL and a lot hotter. We haven't had much time to explore yet but have wandered round Little India - an area playing loud Indian music with lots of Sari shops and restaurants. We also took a brief stroll through Chinatown but that appeared to be closing up for the day when we got there. We are staying in a backpackers hostel and have met people of all nationalities - Danish, Irish, American....the room is basic but clean, the proprietor is full of helpful sightseeing advice, and it is a bargain at one pound fifty a night. Tomorrow we're planning to go sightseeing in Georgetown.
I was sad to leave my flatmates this morning. We all went out for a meal last night and then they drove us to Putrajaya, a purpose built city about 4 years old that is the new administration centre of Malaysia. It reminded me quite a lot of Milton Keynes but was so peaceful compared to the hustle and bustle of Kuala Lumpur.
I hope all is well with everyone at home. I have some photos to put up but the internet connection at the hostel is quite slow so I shall have to try somewhere else - watch this space...
