Amy's travels
Hello everyone, I hope you are all well.
It has been a busy weekend here....
On Friday night we went to a nephrology conference that we were invited to by my consultant. We thought it was at another hotel but it turned out that it was being held in the Le Meridien Hotel next to the Hilton! We were both feeling a little scruffy but this was made worse by the fact that the hotel was also hosting a beauty pagent so there were immaculately dressed women everywhere in ball gowns! The presentations at the conference were followed by a sit down Chinese dinner with many courses, most of which contained seafood (as many of you know, not my favourite!). I was very brave and ate shark fin soup, baby clams, poached fish, and tiger prawns in shells. I must admit I enjoyed them too. The only food I couldn't stretch to was the baby octopus!
On Saturday we went out to Chinatown in KL. We walked all round the area and the Colonial District nearby, and spent ages wandering round the packed market streets. There are people trying to sell you things and motorcycles and stalls everywhere but it has a great atmosphere. All the streets are covered and have Chinese lanterns dangling down. We then went for a gorgeous meal (recommended by the trusty lonely planet) in an ex-British colony house that has been left as it was. It has swing saloon doors and plays 1920s music. The food was a type of Chinese called Nonya - a specific blend of spices with fried noodles or rice. Yum yum!
Sunday was a more relaxing day. We wandered around the Lake gardens and went to see the displays of orchids and hibiscus (it would have been more impressive if they were flowering at the time). The gardens were lovely but it was the most humid day we've had yet and we were flagging by the afternoon so we went home and relaxed on the terrace at our flats.
Today is the start of week two - time seems to be flying by. I will post again soon and look forward to hearing from people,
Lots of love,
