Amy's travels
Hello everyone,
It has taken me a while to locate internet access on Pulau Tioman as it is a very quiet and undeveloped island. We arrived on Monday, flying in on a little 48 seater plane. The landing strip on the island is very small (rumour has it that the pilots practise landing on postage stamps...) making it pretty exciting. The airport was bascially a hut and there are no real roads so you have to get a sea taxi to where you are staying.
We're staying in a little wooden chalet on the beachfront at Air Batang. Each if the places on the island is really just a cluster of chalets on the beach, with a few cafes and dive centres. It is particularly quiet and secluded here at the moment as it is Ramadan so no Malaysians are on holiday.
We have mainly sat on the beach drinking fruit juice and walked along the coastline of the island - I have the sunburn to prove it! There are huge monitor lizards all over the place, and lots of wildlife to see. Yesterday we went out on a speedboat all day to visit some of the smaller uninhabited islands nearby and to go snorkelling. Our first stop was coral island - surprisingly enough right next to some coral reefs. The snorkelling was fantastic - I was swamped by tropical fish, all brightly coloured, and saw baby sharks. I was less keen on the jellyfish but avoided being stung and was reassured by our guide that they're not dangerous. We also went to Monkey Bay (to see monkeys) and to Salang, one of the other places on Pulau Tioman. One of the highlights of the day was eating freshly caught fish (caught by our guide as we snorkelled) that had been barbecued on an open fire he made on the beach. It was the best fish I've ever tasted.
We are heading back to KL tomorrow to meet Will. This involves a ferry and a bus so it's a long day of travelling ahead...
I hope all is well at home,
Love Amy x
