Amy's travels
Hello everyone,
Well I hope you all enjoyed your bank holiday weekend back home. I've had a lovely weekend here...
On Saturday we got the bus from Little India in KL to Orang Asli, a museum about 25km north of KL. I haven't really seen much of little India yet but it was really vibrant with loud Indian music playing out into the street and lots of people dressed in traditional saris and buddhist robes. The bus trip was possibly my favourite part of the day as it is the first time we've really left KL and seen some of the Malaysian countryside. The landscape was very lush and green and we went through a few suburbs of KL which consisted of more brightly coloured brick houses with corrugated iron roofs - making a nice change from the high rise tower blocks of the city. The museum was in a small building pretty much in the middle of nowhere but was really interesting - trying to preserve the culture of the small aboriginal tribes of Orang Asli that are still scattered around West Malaysia but that are slowly being drawn into the modern world. After a confusing bus ride back to KL (you often get randomly asked to get off one bus and onto another one) we shopped in Chinatown. In the evening Helen's Chinese flatmates took us to the local night market in Cheras. We walked there through the local houses and it was nice to see a bit more of the local area. The night market was really busy - obviously a lot of Malays do their main food shopping at the night markets - and sold nearly everything you could think of (it would probably rival Tesco!) at very cheap prices. We tried some local snacks - Kaya balls which are like yorkshire pudding balls filled with jam, and also fish wrapped in banana leaves that had been roasted. Helen's flatmates then picked us some Singapore noodles for tea. Yummy! Hopefully my flatmate, Susan, is going to drive us to the biggest night market in KL on Wednesday night.
Sunday was a lazy day - we went to Bukit Bintang in the afternoon to window shop and people watch. We sat drinking iced tea at a cafe on Bintang, one of the busiest streets in KL and then in the evening we went for a really nice Indian meal at a restaurant.
Today we are just back to our final week of clinical attachment and have been on the wards this morning. I've seen a lot of tropical diseases today which is good as they are quite rare in the uk.
Hope you are all well,
Lots of love, Amy x x x
