So on Friday we celebrated National Identity at school, and it was probably one of the best day I've had since I got here! All the teachers, along with many parents, spent Thursday afternoon preparing the classrooms for the day, each classroom had a different theme and my Grade 1's had typical wines. On Friday morning we got to school nice and early to change into our national dresses, we were very dubious when we first got given our dresses, but after putting them on and spinning around in the big skirts we quickly felt comfortable. It was lovely seeing all the children arriving dressed in the national clothes, the boys in checked shirts, jeans, scarves and cowboy hats, looking like proper little cowboys and the girls wearing beautiful dresses in all different colours. We spent the first 2 hours in our classrooms, it was lovely to see the children very enthusiastic and confidently telling all the visitors about the different wines, I got to have a taste of vino de papa (potato wine) which was very starchy and very very strong for half 9 in the morning!! When the children were allowed to go out for lunch Anna and I went to look around the other classrooms, my favourites were Grade 2, who were doing comidas tipicas (typical foods), and Grade 6 jugos (juice), we got to try montucas and tamalas and lots of different juices, our favourite was the maracuya (passion fruit). After all that food and juice we then decided it was time for lunch…we got lunch from Graciela, who is an amazing cook, which was a typical Honduran mix of refried beans, egg, cheese, a sort of sausage thing, corn tortillas and tajedas (plantain chips), it was delicious!! Then came the games. :D There we horse races, we were summoned to take part in the teachers race which was a bit too much fun, hula hooping, hand football, and skipping. As the day began to wrap up and the visitors left we found out that a lot of the tamalas hadn't been eaten, we now have enough in the fridge to survive off for the next week! We were absolutely shattered by the time everyone had left and all the classrooms had been returned to their normal selves, and it was only 1 o'clock in the afternoon!!
On Saturday morning we woke up at a reasonable time so that we could go in to town in order to FINALLY post our postcards and buy Honduran football shirts…we have been invited to go to the Honduras vs Canada match in San Pedro Sula on Tuesday and are very very excited!! We had found the post office the week before so headed straight for it, only to be told by the man dozing on a chair outside that the post office wasn't open on the weekend…great!! So now we're stuck, I work mornings and Anna works afternoons so we can't go during the week, and it's always closed on weekends and public holidays!!! We then went on a quest to find our very own Honduran football shirts, I was having a very indecisive day (which Mum will know happens quite a lot when shopping, especially when it's mainly packed market stalls) but after wandering back and forth between the different shops and stalls I eventually found one I wanted. Check back soon to find out how the football games goes, its tomorrow.
On the walk home from town we got a very unexpected call from Vegas (our country representative), he had arrived back from the USA a couple of days earlier than planned and so decided to come and see us. It was really good to see Vegas, he took us out for an amazing dinner and we talked all about our project and life in general. At dinner I had a WHOLE fried fish (I hope your impressed Mum), which was sooooo delicious, although it didn't look to happy about the fact I was eating its body. :P Unfortunately we didn't have a camera with us, so I will just have to go back and have another one in order to get proof. :D
We are starting to get very very excited about the football tomorrow, so if you happen to be watching the Honduras vs Canada match tomorrow keep an eye on the crowd for Anna and I, we will be cheering loudly in our Honduran shirts. :D
Hope all is well back home,
xx

Mumsy Fish always look a bit cross - that's why we chop their heads off! Then they get their own back with the bones!! lots of love
Grandpa Dearest Alex, What a joy to read such wonderful blog. I could not comment because my fingers were not working well, but I still remember the greeting; see you on Monday. I keep saying good by to your Granny any day of the week adding see you on Monday, but she does not think it is funny. I would have loved to see you in national Honduran dress. Maybe I find a photo of you somewhere. This is the first time I have hears about wine made out of potatoes. I always thought Poles make gin out of potatoes. By the way is not the “hand football” called Handball? Don’t worry about your local post office. Your blog are my cheer up text. As I am a worrier – grandpa’s job to worry I am pleased to hear that Mr Vegas visited you. I know you are quite grown up but a bit of checking is necessary. And finally; I don’t think UK TV will broadcast Honduras V-s Canada football match so I will have to wait till you describe it in your next blog. All the love from a moderately worried Grandpa.
Granny Lovely long blog, and some great photos. We look forward to hearing about the football match. Lots of love, Granny.
