As it turns out November is a terrible month to have a birthday, back in England November means cold, wind and plenty of rain, and guess what…in Honduras November means the exact same thing, but with the added factor of potential Hurricanes!!! Yay!! Soo, for my birthday, seeing as we couldn't take a trip, we decided to treat ourselves to lotss and lotss of food. :D
For those of you who don't know, my birthday was last Monday (the 12th), and so on Sunday night we headed into town in search of pizza! We decided to go to "Bambino's" where we ordered the classic "how much meat can you get on a pizza" pizza, along with the most Honduran looking pizza on the menu which consisted of salami, refried beans, onions and chilies (up until this point we had still thought it possible to consume a meal that didn't contain refried beans…all hope is now lost). We ate as much pizza as we could fit, along with pineapple jugos (fresh pineapple juice, whizzed up to order) and banana liquados, which came to the humongous sum of £8.50 each!!! Then we decided it wise to stay put for a while, we were both of the view that if we got into a taxi and were driven along the pothole loving roads of Honduras our food wouldn't have stayed inside us for very long…and quite frankly it was quite nice being ridiculously full for once. Then on Monday the other teachers held a mini party for me in the office at recess (lunch time), they sang me happy birthday in English AND Spanish and we had cake. Vanessa (our host) had made the cake herself and it was "tres leches" (three milk) cake, a traditional Honduran cake, which Anna and I have both been meaning to try for ages and ages!! Unfortunately, it did feel a bit like drinking cake (as we had been warned by some Honduran we met a few weeks ago), and although was nice to start with I couldn't eat too much as, asyou can imagine, drinking cake isn't the most pleasant of experiences!!! But, not to fear, the food binge was not over yet!! For dinner Anna kindly cooked me a delicious pile of pancakes which we ate with fresh pineapple, watermelon and banana, and topped off with maple syrup and granola. YUM!!!
Then, this Saturday, the birthday treats continued with a day out in El Progreso. El Progreso is the biggest town between Tela and San Pedro Sula, and took us about an hour and a half to reach on the "chicken bus". The magical thing about El Progreso is that it has a MegaPlaza, and inside that MegaPlaza is a 3 screen cinema!!!!! Not does this cinema have 3 screens, but it is also currently showing Skyfall…IN ENGLISH!!! An opportunity not to be missed.
The day started well, and although the slightly hellish bus ride took about an hour and 45 minutes, we arrived at the MegaPlaza at about 10:30. However, after a little wander we discovered the cinema, closed!!! We almost couldn't believe it (until we remember we were in Honduras), what kind of cinema doesn't open on a Saturday!! We decided not to give up hope…maybe it opens at midday, and so did some more wandering until half 11, which we had decided was a suitable time to have lunch. After much deliberation, the lure of Wendys (an American fast food chain) was just too strong. Wendys, however, turned out to be the best decision we may have ever made, I didn't realise a burger could taste so good. I can't be 100% sure that weeks of pasta/rice with onions hasn't messed with my taste buds, but im pretty sure it was one of the best burgers the world has ever created. Yes, it was that good. Unfortunately by 12 the cinema was still not open and all hope was lost, until, the lovely lady at Wendys informed us that it would be opening at 1. Yay!! We were the first people through the doors when they opened, and bought our Skyfall tickets for 70 Lemps, about £2!!! The film started at 1, yes the same time we were let into the cinema (genius), after about a minute of nothing and then half an advert for another film the movie started. The film was really good, although it may have been slightly more enjoyable if there hadn't been a noise that sounded like dripping/imminent roof collapse/rats in the roof. All in all it was a very good day. :D
Lots of Love
