We had breakfast at 10am at McDonalds at the train station as breakfast was not included at the hotel and was too expensive. We then caught the tram to Bärenplatz and walked to the Parliament Building to book a tour. The next tour was at 2pm but was in German only so we decided to come back for the 3pm tour instead.
We set out on the walking tour, as described on the Bern city map we purchased from the Tourist Information Centre, at Bärenplatz. We walked down Marktgasse to the Ogre Fountain and the Clock Tower.
Continued on down Kramgasse before taking a detour to the Rathaus and the Ensign Fountain. Walked on down Gerechtigkeitgasse past the Justice Fountain and over the Nydeggbrücke which had nice views over the river Aare. Walked up the hill to the Rose Garden where we had lunch taking in the magnificent views over Bern.
After lunch we walked back down the hill to the Bear Pits to watch three fat bears lounging around in their enclosure. We then crossed back over the Nydeggbrücke and walked along Junkerngasse past the Cathedral and through Casinoplatz to the Parliament Building terrace overlooking the river.
We walked back to Bärenplatz and caught the tram to Gurtenbahn where we took the funicular up to Gurten-Kulm for the views over Bern. The views weren't that good as we were too high up and the city too far away.
Caught the tram back to Bärenplatz and walked back to the Parliament Building and went on the 3pm tour which was in French and Germna only!! It was interesting to look around inside even though we had no idea what the guide was talking about. We caught the tram back to Bahnhofplatz and dropped our bags off at the hotel then went out in search of dinner. We ate at the Migros Buffet Restaurant then returned to the hotel to pack for the next days trip to Luxembourg.
