Packed and checked out of our Dublin hotel at 9.30am and drove on the N4 towards Athlone. Stopped in Maynooth at Maynooth Castle. Ruins were in a peaceful area but the tour of the keep did not start until 11am so we took some pictures and video then moved on.
Back on the N4 and a stop over in Athlone for lunch. Had some sandwiches from a small shop near the university..lots of students eating there too so the food must be reasonably priced.
Continued on in the direction of Galway, stopping at Clonmacnoise. Looked around the ruined abbeys and towers in amongst fields of Celtic Crosses in the graveyards surrounding the ruins dating from the 6th century AD. Interesting place but unfortunately you couldn't go to the top of the towers to take in the views.
Drove back on the N6 to Galway where we arrived at our B&B, Ross House, in Salthill at 4pm. We took the 10 minute walk into the city of Galway to the Tourist Information Centre for a city map.
Walked back throught he city to the Spanish Arch which although not spectacular was in a nice spot near the river. We then walked back through the main shopping street of Galway and had dinner at Mings Chinese Restaurant which was reasonably priced.
Walked back to our B&B via the supermarket for some supplies then on to the beach near the B&B for some photos of the sunset. Returned to B&B for a rest and TV after a long day!
