Got up at 7am and had breakfast at the hotel then got picked up for the Golden Circle tour at 8.30am. Our first stop was Hveragerði greenhouse village which wasn't very exciting, it was a town with lots of greenhouses gorwing vegetables and flowers as you'd expect.
The next stop was the volcanic crater, Kerið, with a frozen lake at the bottom. You could walk around the crater if you had the time but with the tour you didn't and the ground was icy so you couldn't walk very quickly anyway.
We then moved on to Gullfoss, a waterfall falling 32m over 2 levels. Paths were icy and hard to walk on without slipping on your arse but the falls were spectacular in their partially forzen state.
Next was Geysir with geothermal pools and the geysers Strokkur and Geysir. Strokkur eruped every 3-7 mins while Geysir only erupted every now and then as it was blocked by junk being thrown into it. There were many other pools of boiling water and mud around the area and we spent a good hour wandering around after having lunch at the cafe.
Our final stop was Þingvellir the seat of the original Icelandic parliament, the AlÞing, and also the rift between the American and Eurasian tectonic plates which are moving 2.5cm apart each year. Rift is 6km wide and has many gorges in the rift area as well as views over the entire rift area.
We then drove back to Reykjavik and called Iceland Excursions to see if Northern Lights tour was on as weather was rainy and overcast. They said they'd decide at 6pm and call the hotel if it was cancelled. Finally got a call from reception at 6.30pm saying the tour was cancelled. Emailed Iceland Excursions requesting refund as we were flying home and could not reschedule. We walked into the city to find something for dinner. Ate at Cafe Paris, which was busy but the food was good and not too expensive.
